This piece is not only about the dangers and corruption present in many of the organizations we adhere to, but the religions we have created from capitalism, social media, and healthy living, which in many regards peddle perfection and are therefore unattainable.
This piece also considers self-destructive urges. What is it within ourselves that causes us to do things we know we shouldn’t? What are the lies we tell ourselves and how do we convince ourselves of their veracity? As an aside, I couldn’t help but think of evangelical snake handlers while I was creating this image, which is a fascinating practice in so many ways.
This piece is part of my current exhibition Milagros in My Pocketbook , on through October 6th at the Fisher Gallery located in the Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center, NOVA, Alexandria Campus. I will be giving an artist talk at 6:00PM Thursday October 3rd.
